A British investment banker charged with the murder of two prostitutes in Hong Kong was apparently 'devastated' after his fiancée - a fellow trader - cheated on him with another man. Cambridge graduate Rurik Jutting, 29, was arrested over the weekend after the discovery of one 'nearly decapitated' woman in a suitcase and another who had her throat slashed at his luxury flat. He appeared in court this morning for a short hearing in which the two charges of murder were read out to him and was remanded in custody until November 10.

It came as police said they were widening the search for possible other victims to the Philippines, where Jutting is understood to have also used sex workers.
A former acquaintance today said Jutting had been in a serious relationship with a British female trader which ended bitterly around two years ago.
The pair had become engaged, but he was left distraught when she reportedly had an affair after moving to New York from London.
The source, who declined to be named, said: 'She wanted to marry him pretty fervently and he proposed, but she ended up cheating on him.'
The fiancee was forced to fly back to London because Jutting was so heartbroken.
'It was him ultimately him who broke it off - I think he took her infidelity quite badly.'
'They tried to reconcile. But I think maybe a month or so into it he was not able to come to terms with the fact that she had been unfaithful.'

When Laura Lee, a part-time escort and sex worker rights campaigner, stood up in the Northern Ireland assembly to give evidence against a proposed bill that would make it illegal to buy sex, as in Sweden, she was blunt in her estimation of the damage it would cause. “If the Swedish model is introduced in any way, shape or form in the north or in the south of Ireland, the state will have blood on its hands,” she said earlier this year.

Late on Monday evening in Belfast, the human trafficking and exploitation bill – containing a controversial clause that makes buying sex a criminal offence – was passed with cross-party support, making Northern Ireland the first region of the UK to make the buying of sex illegal, following in the footsteps of Sweden and other Nordic countries such as Norway and Iceland.

Lee fears that the change will increase the danger for prostitutes. “This will increase violence, make sex workers less likely to report crimes to the police, increase stigma and force the sex industry underground,” said Lee. “I find it incredible that people push this moralising crusade in the face of all the evidence which says the decriminalisation of the sex industry is the only way to improve the welfare of sex workers.”

Ten people have been indicted in connection with a prostitution ring that recruited Asian women to work as prostitutes in dozens of brothels throughout the Bay Area for over a decade, officials announced Thursday.

The defendants -- Allen Fong, Ya Huai Hung, Leow Wan Ru Veron, Robert Chun, Jie Mu, Laurence Shu Kwan Lee, Kevin Hartig, Waylon Fong, Angelina Chuong, and Chonthicha Jaemratanasophin -- face charges of conspiracy, use of interstate and foreign commerce to promote prostitution, money laundering and importation of people for immoral purposes, according to a release from the U.S. attorney's office.

According to the indictment, all 10 people conspired to operate 40 brothels in the Bay Area from at least August 2002 through July 2014. Court documents stated those involved in the scheme solicited women, primarily from Asian countries, to work for them as prostitutes. The co-conspirators would rent apartments to use as brothels for short periods of time.

The group used websites like MyRedbook, Craigslist and Backpage to post ads for prostitution services, which included photographs of nude and partially nude women in provocative or suggestive poses, according to court documents.

Men and women would then call the number posted, and the co-defendants would allegedly coordinate with customers for services. Prostitutes kept about two-thirds of their earnings and paid one-third to the group, primarily through Allen Fong, the ringleader, according to court documents.

The group allegedly operated brothels in Pinole, San Mateo, Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Belmont, Fremont, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Foster City, San Bruno, Colma and South San Francisco.

Three sex industry insiders have shared their views of the impact of criminalising the purchase of sex in candid interviews with the BBC.
Eighty percent of the Northern Ireland public support proposals currently before Stormont which will criminalise the purchase of sexual services.
The new law is designed to curb demand for women trafficked into prostitution. But research has claimed a large majority of sex workers fear the proposal will put them at greater risk.

'Caroline'

'Caroline' advertises a full range of sexual services on a leading escort website. For part of the week she is based in Belfast, receiving between one and six clients a day, charging £90 for 30 minutes or £150 for a full hour. "I only work during the day. I'm not interested in people coming out of pubs drunk so I finish at 8pm." She said she has turned away clients that have wanted to take drugs while with her. Working independently, without a "booker" or pimp, and working alone from a rented flat means she is not breaking the law.
"I'm a law-abiding citizen." she said.

Financial hardship

Referring to the criminalisation of paying for sex, she added: "Even though I would not be a criminal, I would be associated with criminals. I'm actually turning people into criminals, and that I don't like."
The well-spoken 46-year-old English graduate first considered a career as an escort after experiences as a swinger. But she describes the financial hardship, caused by her ex-husband stopping child support payments, as the "catalyst" that propelled her into prostitution.
She plans to continue working for a couple more years, and is currently studying for two diplomas that will allow her to change careers.

Exit strategy

She said: "The idea is to clear some debts I got when I was a single parent.
"I have no regrets about doing this job. It's not something that I'm desperate to get out of, but I feel it's something I need to be single to do, and at my age, maybe it would be nice to be with somebody."
She enforces a minimum age limit of 23 and her clients come from both blue and white-collar professions. She says some have disabilities, and others lack social skills to make contact with women.
She also claims she has been visited by virgins aged from 24 to 40, as well as single men, and men in sexless relationships.
She said: "When you're being intimate with someone you're more likely to tell them something."
She said many clients confided personal and emotional secrets in her. "There is a lot of counselling involved in this job," she said.

A man charged with the killing of a prostitute in Gary, Indiana, has led police to the decomposing bodies of six other women in assorted abandoned homes in the city spurring speculation that he may be America’s latest serial killer with perhaps yet more murders to his name stretching back over decades.

So far Darren Deon Vann has been charged only with the murder of 19-year-old Afrika Hardy, a sex worker whose body was found at the weekend in a motel room in Hammond, just west of Gary and south of Chicago in neighbouring Illinois. He led police to the bodies of the six other women after being taken into custody.

“It could go back as far as 20 years based on some statements we have and that’s yet to be corroborated,” noted Hammond Police Chief John Doughty. “It is possible other victims could surface.” Of the other victims, three have been identified as Anith Jones, 35, Teiarra Batey, 28, and Christine Williams, 36, all from the surrounding area.

Investigators are combing through missing persons cases locally and in Texas in search of anything that could tie them to Mr Vann. He served five years in prison in Texas after being convicted of sexually assaulting and trying to strangle an Austin woman. He returned to Gary, where he had previously lived, after being released one year ago.

The capture of Mr Vann, 43, has gripped residents of Gary, a once-vibrant city on the southern end of Lake Michigan that over decades has become synonymous with rust-belt blight and violent crime. Residents expressed horror that its huge collection of abandoned structures had become a dumping ground for a suspected serial killer.
